Latta House
This is the oldest house in York (c.1824), possibly the oldest in York County. It is believed that all 750,000 bricks in the home were made in England, used as ballast in a ship, and hauled to Yorkville by ox carts on rutted dirt roads. This Georgian architecture home was built by Thomas Hoover and rests on a 3-foot solid granite base that extends 8 feet into the ground. The walls are seven bricks thick (24 inches) and the original house had 14 fireplaces. All floors are all heart pine including the attic. The house has a 250-pound English brass chandelier, a freight elevator that opens at two sides and goes to the third floor and a 250-year old Czechoslovakian chandelier with 500 prisms. For more information, contact the Yorkville Historical Society.
